HIP-C Shared Use Workshop, Facilitated by ChangeLab Solutions
On September 17, HIP-Cuyahoga teamed up with ChangeLab Solutions to host a workshop at Bethany Baptist Church on creating shared use agreements. Shared use agreements are an affordable way of increasing opportunities for physical activity in low-resource communities where there may not many obvious places to play or exercise. Institutions with activity space make that space available to other organizations and the broader community to host different types of programs. Between public schools and faith-based organizations, there are a variety of recreational facilities in our neighborhoods—gymnasiums, meeting rooms, playgrounds, fields, courts, and tracks—where people can engage in physical activity. Unfortunately, these spaces are often locked and inaccessible to the community due to concerns about resources, maintenance, security, and liability.

Shared use agreements open the doors to these facilities in under-served communities. Schools are consistent shared use site partners, and the Cleveland Municipal School District has a shared use policy in place. The September 17th workshop served as an open platform to define terms, understand the benefits, address concerns from a legal perspective, and make connections between facilities, neighborhoods, and programs.

HIP-Cuyahoga and the PRCHN REACH staff have developed a Shared Use Agreement Resource Guide to help community and neighborhood groups navigate all of the potential pitfalls and requirements of developing shared use agreements in their neighborhoods.
