Meet Post-doctoral Scholar Carissa Smock
Tell me a bit about your work before you joined the PRCHN. Where did you work and what did you do?
I worked at Kent State University College of Public Health as an Instructor and Research Assistant. This research included place-based health care provider exercise prescriptions and referrals, measuring trail quality and use for community exercise using GIS and GPS, teaching integration and adoption of exercise into everyday life across the lifespan, and hospital community health needs assessments.

Tell me about your education. Where and what did you study? Is your work here radically different than what you studied in college? In other words, has your career path made any unusual changes?
I completed my Ph.D. and MPH at Kent State University College of Public Health with a specialization in Health Policy and Management. Prior to going back to school and at working at Kent, my career was quite different, working in media and marketing for concert promoters, radio, and print due to my undergrad degree in Public Relations.

What aspects of your new position are most intriguing to you? What are you looking forward to?
Helping others become more physically active is my passion. I am excited to build on my existing research skills and acquire new techniques to do just this within the greater Cleveland community.

What are some of your interests outside of work?
Spending time with family and friends, cycling, running, hiking, and traveling.

Where did you grow up and where have you settled in Cleveland?
I grew up in Findlay, Ohio and have settled in Shaker Heights.

Is there anything else that you'd like to share with the PRCHN and its stakeholders?
I appreciate the opportunity to serve the greater Cleveland area through my postdoc at the Center for Child Health & Policy at UH and the PRCHN!
