New Youth Data Brief: Sexual Risk Behaviors and Academic Achievement
The PRCHN's Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) team has released a new data brief, Sexual Risk Behaviors and Academic Achievement. Data from the 2017 YRBS of Cuyahoga County high school students show a general pattern of increased engagement in sexual risk behaviors with every decrease in letter grade typically earned. This relationship between sexual risk behaviors and academic achievement in Cuyahoga County high school students is similar to that seen nationally.

Some highlights from the brief include:
  • Students receiving mostly D’s and F’s are 4 times more likely to engage in sexual risk behaviors than students with A’s, B’s, and C’s.
  • Sexual risk behaviors and grades differ between males and females. Females with lower grades are 4 times more likely to have had four or more sexual partners than females with higher grades.
  • Males with lower grades are 6 times more likely to have gotten someone pregnant than males with higher grades.
