New Data Brief: Weight Status in Cuyahoga County
The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) team has released the second of three data briefs examining adolescent health habits and status in Cuyahoga County. The data, Weight Status in Cuyahoga County, uses data from the 2017 survey of Cuyahoga County high school students and 2016 survey of middle school students to look at overweight and obesity among county middle and high school students, as well as prevalence of BMI categories, prevalence of hunger, and perceptions of weight. The data brief series also includes Physical Activity in Cuyahoga County and DIetary Behavior in Cuyahoga County.  Some key findings:
  • One in three Cuyahoga County high school students were overweight or obese in 2017.
  • Female high school students are more likely than male high school students to consider themselves overweight and to be trying to lose weight regardless of their weight status.
  • Overall, 15.9% of middle and 17.8% of high school students reported BMIs consistent with being overweight.
