PRCHN Associate Director Dr. Erika Trapl and Affiliated Faculty member Dr. Scott Frank were among those asked to provide testimony and data as Cleveland City Council was deliberating on legislation banning the sale of tobacco products to those under age 21.

The Network of Community Advisors (NOCA) is the community advisory board of the PRCHN. Its members represent a wide variety of community, municipal, and nonprofit groups. The group recently welcomed six new members.

In September, PEER began training its third cohort of Fellows, who come from a variety of organizations and backgrounds. A study team lead by PRCHN Associate Director Sue Flocke, PhD, received a $2 million grant from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to study a combination approach to help patients stop smoking, particularly those who are socially and economically disadvantaged.

"Health Matters Here" Community Day image "Health Matters Here" Community Day
HIP-Cuyahoga is making great strides in its goal to improve healthy eating, active living, and chronic disease management in key neighborhoods throughout the cities of Cleveland and East Cleveland. To better connect residents with resources that help combat health inequity, HIP-Cuyahoga held a Community Day on September 26th at Shaw High School in East Cleveland.

On September 17, HIP-Cuyahoga teamed up with ChangeLab Solutions to host a workshop at Bethany Baptist Church on creating shared use agreements. Shared use agreements are an affordable way of increasing opportunities for physical activity in low-resource communities where there may not be many obvious places to play or exercise.

County-Wide Collaboration the Key to REACH Grant  image County-Wide Collaboration the Key to REACH Grant
The PRCHN is part of two of the of the three Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded in the Greater Cleveland area. REACH grant awardees are charged with targeting poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and improving linkages to quality health services.

How does the immediate neighborhood affect a child’s or family’s ability to make healthy lifestyle changes? The PRCHN’s IMPACT Navigators are spending much of the summer conducting neighborhood assessments for students enrolled in the IMPACT study, looking at a range of factors that might make a neighborhood conducive—or not conducive—to a healthy lifestyle.

Approximately 1 in 4 Cuyahoga County teens reported experiencing depressive symptoms, according to the PRCHN's new data brief, Depressive Symptoms in Cuyahoga County, which grew out of responses from the 2013 and 2014 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

HIP-Cuyahoga launched the first-ever Community Health Improvement Plan for Cuyahoga County on June 11, 2015.  
Summer Internships, PRCHN Style image Summer Internships, PRCHN Style
Some summer internships revolve around making copies, filing, and maybe taking minutes at a meeting. That isn’t the case at the Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods, where interns are engaged in a wide range of projects such as conducting surveys and audits of food retail establishments in the city of Cleveland, surveying SNAP recipients to gather data for the PRCHN’s core research, and making an informative/recruiting video for the healthy corner store initiative.

Cohort 2 of the PEER (Partners in Education, Evaluation & Research) program celebrated their graduation June 19 at the Tinkham Veale Center on campus. PEER fellows, faculty partners and organizational mentors each received recognition of completion awards and were acknowledged for their hard work throughout the 15 month program.

During spring semester, the PRCHN sent a team of interns out on a unique data collection project. Their mission? To visit every Cleveland Municipal School District (CMDS) building to look at water accessibility by observing the school water fountains.

FM Tracks, an iOS app and website being developed by PRCHN Associate Director Darcy Freedman, PhD., will be supported for wide-scale national dissemination through a newly funded USDA grant award to Wholesome Wave.

Sharing the PRCHN's Experiences image Sharing the PRCHN's Experiences
One of the many benefits to being part of the national Prevention Research Center (PRC) network are the reciprocal relationships the PRCHN has with other PRCs. The deep inter-relationships of the PRCs and their ability to help each other was brought into focus in January when PhD student Alyssa Mayer of the University of South Florida interviewed Jean Frank, the staff liaison for the PRCHN’s community advisory board (Network of Community Advisors) who has been a part of the PRCHN since its inception in 2009.

The PRCHN is growing, with three recent additions to our staff. Siddhartha Yavvari is a Data Analyst who is currently working with preliminary data from the IMPACT program. Nicole Vaudrin is the coordinator of the O-NOPREN initiative. Kevin Heine is a new Navigator with the IMPACT program who will be working directly with students in the program

Survey Development Services through the Behavioral Science Measurement Lab image Survey Development Services through the Behavioral Science Measurement Lab
The Behavioral Science Measurement Lab (BSML), established in 2012, provides survey development services to assist investigators in conducting behavioral and population research. Survey development services have been available through the Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods since 2008 but are now one of the consolidated cores within the BSML
